History of the Dunlap Livestock
Auction
Jim Schaben graduated from Reppert School of
Auctioneering in 1945 and knew he wanted to make his mark in the auction
business. Living in Earling, Iowa, Jim and Ruth managed the Dunlap
Livestock Auction in 1948. In 1950, Jim and Ruth were offered the chance
to purchase the Dunlap Livestock Auction. Several things have changed
since their first sale of less than 30 head of cattle, hogs and sheep.
A big decision was in 1973 when Jim and Ruth stated
construction on the present facility that was finished in 1974. On
December 6thm, 1974 over 2000 head were offered on the first sale in the
new yards on grand opening day. In August of 2000 Jim and Ruth along with the entire Schaben family
celebrated 50 years in the auction business. To commemorate this great
event a brand new 2000 Ford pickup truck was given away. Doug Schneppel
of McClelland, Iowa was the lucky winner. In
January of 2002 Dunlap Livestock Auction hosted the Greater Midwest
Livestock Auctioneer Championships. 7000 head of cattle were offered in
a 2 day special precondition sale. John Korrey of Illiff, Colorado was
selected as the 2002 champion. Matt Lowery of Burwell, Nebraska was
second and Brian Little of Wann, Oklahoma was third. |

In
June of 2002 Dunlap Livestock Auction hosted the World Livestock
Auctioneering Championships. 6000 head of feeder cattle were offered in
one of our largest sale ever. John Korrey of Illiff, Colorado was
crowned the 2002 World Champion. Trent Stewart of Redmond, Oregon was
second and Matt Lowery of Burwell, Nebraska was third. The
livestock auction facility has a different look today than it did 50
yeas ago, but Jim and Ruth along with sons, Jay and wife Karla, Jim Jr.
and wife Cindie, Jon and wife Julie and their families remain committed
to this great industry and the competitive method of livestock
marketing.
